The final rule on crane operators was issued by OSHA on November 7th. This new rule clarifies the certification requirements for crane operators and enforces the employer’s duty to ensure that crane operators can safely operate the equipment.

Also under the new rule, employers are now required to:

  • evaluate the crane operators; and
  • document successful completion of evaluations.

All crane operators MUST be certified or licensed and receive additional training in order to operate new machinery. This goes into effective on December 9th. The evaluations and documentation requirements will be effective on February 7, 2019.
