Ergonomics Can Deliver: Reducing Warehouse and E-Commerce Injuries

Ergonomics,

The warehousing and delivery industry, which includes e-commerce and last-mile delivery, consistently reports one of the highest injury rates of any sector. A significant portion of these injuries stems from manually handling and moving heavy or awkwardly shaped objects, which are common in this rapidly growing and fast-paced industry.

Historically, OSHA has cited only a few companies for violating the general duty clause when strong evidence connected manual handling tasks to musculoskeletal injuries. However, OSHA recently launched a three-year Warehouse National Emphasis Program aimed at addressing warehouse hazards through outreach and inspections. This initiative focuses on risks associated with equipment use, walking surfaces, exits, fire protection, and ergonomics—specifically tasks involving lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.

Despite these efforts, warehouses continue to report high rates of musculoskeletal injuries, primarily due to routine handling of heavy or awkward items. A recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) report revealed that between 2018 and 2023, OSHA issued over 2,500 violations to warehouse and delivery companies, yet only 11 were related to ergonomics hazards.

The GAO has since recommended that OSHA enhance its efforts to address ergonomics-related risks by improving data collection on musculoskeletal injuries, offering more training for inspectors, and developing tools to help employers and inspectors identify and mitigate physical risk factors.

Warehouse and delivery companies don’t need to wait for an OSHA inspection to take action. By implementing basic ergonomics principles, organizations can proactively reduce injury risks while boosting operational efficiency. Companies with ergonomics programs typically experience fewer injuries, lower workers’ compensation costs, improved employee retention, and greater productivity.
